Function is always the beginning concern when starting new pieces or a series of pieces similar in intent. Pottery easily used in our busy lives; washed, pulled out and put away time and again. Food surfaces must be vitrified and pleasant to eat from. Colors must be warm and inviting, look good with garlic mashed potatoes, orange carrots or green broccoli! Textures must be interesting to the point of inviting exploration and continued interest and fascination in the surface. The clay body must be durable. This is the challenge of every pot.

The pottery's decorative imagery expresses an ongoing fascination with the cycles of life that surround us everyday. References from nature, the animals, fish the sun. illustrate some very basic elements of our lives, such as water, air, soil, animal and plant. Cycles that continue year after year regardless of our current destination.

Clayworking is first and foremost a learned craft. Skill and technique, accumulated through practice, defines a pot's quality. Enhancing articles we use everyday with images important to our daily lives make it all the more fun!

All the pottery shown here is designed and created by ceramic artist Mary Jo Schmith, owner of Front Avenue Pottery & Tile Company. The pottery is made from a stoneware clay formulated for high fire reduction, and decorated and finished with colored slips and glazes formulated by the artist in the studio.
